TVO Highlights the Power of Civics on International Day of Education 2025

TVO Media Education Group is committed to empowering Ontarians with fact-based, verified information to help them make informed decisions about the issues shaping our society. That’s why we are focusing on civics education on this International Day of Education, January 24, 2025.

In a time of significant political and social change, both in Canada and around the world, the ability to navigate complex democratic processes is more essential than ever. A robust civics education empowers individuals to understand their rights, responsibilities, and the democratic processes that shape their communities and country.

A 2023 study by Abacus Data* revealed that a third of Canadian adults don’t recall learning anything about civics in school. In response, TVO is curating a diverse range of engaging civics content and programming, including The Agenda with Steve Paikin, Unrigged, and Nerds On Politics. With offerings from TVOkids and TVO Learn, there’s something for everyone, empowering learners of all ages to become informed and active citizens, and you can find it all in one place here.

In a special TVO Today Live Townhall airing Sunday, January 26 at 7p.m., Steve Paikin will explore what every Ontarian needs to know to be an effective, informed citizen, with ten experts including Erin O’Toole, former leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, and the Official Opposition, Amber Morley, Toronto city councillor and deputy mayor, Rochelle Ivri, Citizenship Judge, Ken Boyd, Director of Education at CIVIX Canada, and more.

With an informed electorate, democracy thrives, as voters can make thoughtful, educated decisions that reflect their values and priorities.
