At TVO Media Education Group (TVO), we value the opportunity Black History Month brings to feature content that celebrates the enduring contributions and leadership of Black Canadians. As a mission-driven organization working to ensure equitable access to educational experiences for all Ontarians, especially those from underserviced communities, our commitment to Black excellence extends beyond February, but this month we shine a special spotlight on content from and about the Black community.
February marks the world premiere of TVO Original Play It Loud, a feature documentary that uncovers how Jamaican music became a pivotal and unexpected part of Canadian culture, establishing Canada as a mecca for Jamaican music in the 60s and 70s, paving the way for today’s Black Canadian music stars. Across our TVO Today, TVO docs and TVOkids channels we have curated TVO content that amplifies Black voices and celebrates Black communities here and will be sharing relevant TVO Learn activities on our channels throughout the month of February.
Black history is a vibrant tapestry woven with stories of strength, innovation, and perseverance that have shaped the history of our country and our province.
Let’s take this opportunity to reflect, learn, and celebrate the richness of Black history, while committing to fostering a more inclusive future for all.
