Today, The Honourable Liz Sandals, Ontario Minister of Education, joined TVO at an elementary school in Oakville to officially launch TeachOntario, TVO’s award-winning online community for teachers. We were pleased to also be joined by Indira Naidoo-Harris, MPP for Halton; members of the education community; teachers and media.
It was a proud moment for TVO and our education partners – the Ontario Teachers’ Federation and its Affiliates, and the Ministry of Education, with whom TVO worked to bring TeachOntario to life – to present the result of a truly collaborative effort: a high-calibre educational product that demonstrates TVO’s innovation in using technology to support learning in Ontario.
Created to support sharing, collaboration, and knowledge exchange amongst educators across Ontario, TeachOntario started as a small pilot with a community of 15 educators two years ago and has grown into a robust space for professional learning.
Today, the space lives and breathes by the grassroots leadership of teachers who actively engage on the platform and create and shape its content. An ever-growing community of almost 4,000 educators are connecting and sharing every day in order to make a greater impact with students in the classroom.
One such educator is TeachOntario super-user Maureen Asselin, a Grade 6 teacher from Oakville’s St. Mary Catholic School. At the launch, she spoke about how the platform has helped facilitate important interactions and discussions about math with Daniel Rolo, a fellow teacher in Chatham (whom she’s only ever met via TeachOntario). She also welcomed us into her classroom to demonstrate how she and Daniel use technology to solve math problems collaboratively between their classrooms. Seeing this example of innovative teaching practices inspired by TeachOntario underscored the positive impact that TeachOntario is already making.
As the province’s partner for digital learning inside and outside the classroom, TVO is committed to innovating in the digital space with resources such as TeachOntario. TVO is proud to champion technology to help reinvent learning so that kids can be successful – in school and beyond.
