Statement regarding Canadian Media Guild strike action

As of 10:30 am EST on Monday August 21, 2023, the 74 TVO Media Education Group employees represented by the Canadian Media Guild (CMG) began strike action.

TVO has been negotiating with the union for a number of months to reach an agreement that is fair and equitable for our CMG employees, is respectful of the public and donor dollars TVO manages, and ensures that TVO can continue to produce the exceptional content TVO is known for.

The TVO employees represented by CMG include roles such as producers on The Agenda with Steve Paikin, current affair journalists writing for TVO.org, and digital learning content producers for TVO Learn.

While our audiences may notice some changes to upcoming current affairs content as a result of the strike, Ontarians will still be able to watch quality TVO programs and documentaries on our broadcast channel and access our wide variety of content on the TVO Today app, at TVO.org, and through the daily TVO Today newsletter. There will be no changes to TVOkids, and there will be no impact on Ontario learners, parents or teachers using TVO Learn, or students getting free 1:1 tutoring help with TVO Mathify, or on any students taking TVO ILC courses.

“While it is unfortunate that we have not yet been able to come to a collective bargaining agreement with our CMG employees, TVO Media Education Group remains committed to continuing discussions with CMG and finding a resolution,” said Jeffrey L. Orridge, CEO of TVO. “We are ready to meet with CMG at any time and we remain confident that we can bring this to a resolution that works for both parties. We look forward to continuing our work together to bring important current affair journalism and educational content to Ontarians.”
