Toronto, Canada, November 5, 2025 – TVO’s The Thread with Nam Kiwanuka Season 3 has won the Best Canadian Local News Award from Radio Television Digital News Association of Canada (RTDNA) for Investigative Excellence in the Multiplatform category at a Toronto gala on November 1, prevailing over nominees from both CTV and CBC.

The award specifically recognizes two standout episodes from Season 3, following The Thread’s recent RTDNA Central Canada win for the same category.

“Thank you to RTDNA Canada for this honour,” says Elizabeth St. Philip, Director of Program Development at TVO. “We couldn’t have done this without the people who shared their stories with such openness, and my dedicated team who worked hard to expose the personal impact of precarious housing and the experiences of international students. These are the human stories behind the headlines, and we are so grateful they resonated. It’s a reminder that investigative storytelling matters and helps us see complex social issues with greater understanding and empathy.

“Winning the Investigative Excellence Multiplatform in the Central Region at the RTDNA Award’s was wonderful but to win this award against much larger outlets shows the caliber on hand at TVO,” says Nam Kiwanuka, host of The Thread. “We’re a small team but a mighty one. And our team didn’t do it alone. We did it with the support of our colleagues behind the scenes – this award is as much theirs as it is ours.”

Congratulations to The Thread team who worked diligently on this award-winning series.

The RTDNA Canada Awards honour the best journalists, programs, platforms, stations and news gathering organizations in audio, digital and video.
