The 2023 Michener Awards recognize TVO journalist Sarah Trick and educator Alanna King

Public service honour will support the creation of a new style guide for disabilities coverage

Toronto, Ontario, CanadaThe Michener Awards 2023 jury has recognized two TVO staff members for their vision to create a new style guide that will help journalists cover disabilities in a more thoughtful, accurate and nuanced way. Digital media producer Sarah Trick and educator Alanna King will receive the Michener-Richard O’Hagan educational fellowship, which supports “the advancement and enrichment of the education of Canadian journalists and journalism students.”

In their fellowship application, Trick and King wrote that “journalists are not and should not be activists, but they do have the responsibility to accurately reflect the communities they cover and live in.” This digital style guide will allow journalists to better represent the people and communities portrayed in the media.

This year’s Michener Award recipients will be honoured in a ceremony hosted by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon Governor General of Canada, which will take place on June 16, 2023, at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, Ontario. Learn more about the Michener Awards at
