Nisha Pahuja’s film has been lauded by juries and audiences across North America

Toronto, Ontario, December 5, 2023 – The award-winning documentary To Kill a Tiger from Toronto-based filmmaker Nisha Pahuja is now easily accessible to all Ontarians via the TVO Today Docs website, YouTube channel and apps.

The story follows Ranjit, a farmer from Jaharkhand, India, as he sets out on a rare journey to demand justice for his 13-year-old daughter, a survivor of sexual assault. In the pursuit of justice, he faces pressure from villagers to drop the charges against his daughter’s rapists and tackles the complex court system in India — a country where a rape is reported every 20 minutes. The film addresses India’s epidemic of sexual violence against women and brings about a social reckoning that is long overdue.

“While To Kill a Tiger is a head-on confrontation with the massive problem of sexual violence in India, it is grounded in the story of a father’s enduring love and support for his daughter,” says John Ferri, VP of Programming and Content at TVO. “Nisha Pahuja captures the bravery of Ranjit and his family in standing up to the normalization of such gruesome acts. It’s stirring to witness their moral courage.”

The highly praised documentary is also backed by a star-studded production team that includes Mindy Kaling, Dev Patel and Rupi Kaur.

To Kill a Tiger has won the Amplify Voices Award for Best Canadian Feature Film at TIFF 2022, the Best Documentary Award at the 2023 Palm Springs International Film Festival and the Ted Rogers Best Feature Length Documentary at the 2023 Canadian Screen Awards. The documentary is currently on an international tour of theatres in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom.

“It’s been an incredible year for To Kill a Tiger, and I am so grateful for what it’s accomplished,” says filmmaker Nisha Pahuja. “After our very first screening at TIFF, I knew that audiences around the world would be deeply affected by the family at the heart of the film and their steadfast determination to realize justice no matter the cost. Ranjit, Jaganti and their daughter Kiran are the epitome of resilience. They remind all of us that change is possible especially when it’s fuelled by love.”
