Steve Paikin launches his new book on Bill Davis

On October 5, 2016, TVO hosted the official launch of Steve Paikin’s newest book, Bill Davis: Nation Builder, and Not So Bland After All.

TVO had the great honour of being joined by Mr. Davis himself, members of his family from across the generations, and a number of elected officials – past and present – for whom Mr. Davis is a model for civic engagement. Some of our special guests included Premier Kathleen Wynne as well as former Ontario Premiers Ernie Eves and David Peterson; the Hon. Tony Clement; the Hon. Liz Sandals; Patrick Brown, Leader of the Official Opposition; several current and former MPPs; and Mayor John Tory.

The first-ever authorized biography of Bill Davis, the book chronicles the remarkable contributions of Ontario’s 18th premier – his values, vision of politics and commitment to building our province. Among his many achievements, he oversaw a transformation of Ontario’s public education system and founded TVO.

Steve Paikin is the anchor of The Agenda with Steve Paikin, TVO’s flagship current affairs program. Steve Paikin is also an accomplished author who has previously written four books on politics, including Paikin and the Premiers, and Public Triumph, Private Tragedy,  about former Premier John Robarts. His passion and knowledge for Ontario’s rich political history and those who have shaped it make him a most fitting author for this book.

The words of tribute and feelings of admiration for Mr. Davis were certainly in abundance. Mayor Tory, who served in Mr. Davis’ office in the 1980s and is interviewed in the book, spoke of the great support Mr. Davis gave him no matter what public endeavour Mayor Tory took up.

Mr. Davis gave lively and poignant remarks about his life and years in office. He mentioned that when he was offered the role of Minister of Education, he accepted without hesitation – to the benefit of all Ontarians. Throughout the night, he graciously chatted with a string of admirers and well-wishers.

TVO is grateful for the support of the evening’s sponsor, the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario, a long-time supporter of The Agenda with Steve Paikin.

A portion of proceeds from the evening’s book sales support TVO in its vision to create a better world through the power of learning. The book will be in stores beginning October 8.
