The entire TVO Media Education Group (TVO) community mourns the passing of one of our most impactful patrons, Lynton “Red” Wilson.
Red was among that rare group of individuals who reached the pinnacle of service in three distinct sectors of Canadian society. In the private sector, he built a stellar career, serving as an executive leader and on the boards of some of Canada’s leading companies across banking, the automotive sector, telecommunications, and the food refining industry. In public service, Red’s contributions ranged from postings in the Canadian Foreign Service to serving as Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, culminating in his appointment as Chancellor of McMaster University.
Equally remarkable was Red’s deep commitment to volunteering and philanthropy. He dedicated millions of dollars and countless hours of leadership to dozens of community organizations, including Historica Canada, the Canadian Opera Company, the Royal Ontario Museum, and McMaster University, among many others.
It was in this spirit of service and civic engagement that Red made his most significant contribution to TVO. Through The Wilson Foundation, Red became the founding sponsor of our TVO Today Live series. Over the past four years, TVO Today Live has held 19 community events, bringing together voices that explore democracy and public policy, from celebrated Ontario and Canadian figures such as Margaret Atwood to renowned international journalists like Bob Woodward, alongside Chief Justices, business leaders, Senators, academics, and community leaders. These events have been viewed live, online, or via broadcast by thousands of Canadians. This broader reach has helped deepen public understanding of key democratic and policy issues, fostering more informed conversations in communities across Ontario and beyond. None of this would have been possible without Red Wilson’s dedication to education, public policy, and his extraordinary generosity.
To Red’s family, friends, and all those who have been touched by his leadership, service, and compassion, we at TVO offer our deepest sympathies.
Red Wilson will be profoundly missed, but his legacy will endure in so many meaningful ways. We are proud that TVO Today Live stands as one of them.
