TVO Continues to Champion Black Youth with Summer Program Partnership

Toronto, Ontario, August 16, 2024 — For the fourth year, TVO Media Education Group (TVO) proudly hosted students from the Black Student Summer Leadership Program (BSSLP). TVO’s participation in this program is part of the organization’s commitment to ensuring all Ontarians have equitable access to educational experiences, particularly those in underserviced or overlooked communities.

The BSSLP, created by Toronto District School Board’s (TDSB) Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement, aims to provide self-identifying Black students placements within organizations to develop and expand their leadership abilities, build transferable skills, and, in the long-term, aims to support the increase of the number of individuals identifying as Black in careers in which they may be underrepresented.

“By investing in the BSSLP, we are making a commitment to a better future for all Ontarians,” says Jeffrey L. Orridge, CEO of TVO. “TVO is committed to ensuring every student has the opportunity to build on their success and reach their potential and by eliminating barriers and supporting young Black leaders, we expand the possibilities for future excellence.”

Supported by mentors from across TVO, the BSSLP student leaders gained hands-on experience through exercises and discussions on topics such as marketing, content production, podcasting, finance and teaching. Outcomes for students participating in a BSSLP placement at TVO include insights into a variety of careers and the different pathways students can take to get there. TVO also provided the students a platform to voice their ideas and be heard by the organization and its leaders.

Each year, TVO continues to proudly host BSSLP student leaders, acknowledging the importance of empowering Black students to navigate the transition from education to the workforce. Through hands-on experiences, TVO helps these students explore how their interests, academic backgrounds, and skills can pave the way for future success.
